The Looking Glass Rivermonster

Most of my fishing this fall has been for pike in the Looking Glass River somewhere, um, nearby. One night, Dad and I were walking along the Looking Glass toward the farm market. We saw a huge pike! The next week, we came back to catch it. The first time, I broke my line and my pole. The next day, I caught him! The Looking Glass Rivermonster, I call him, was 32 inches and he pulled me into the river! The next week, I came back with my friend Noah, and I think we caught him again, but the hook came out of his mouth and he fell out of my net.

Special Edition: Frogs

A gray tree frog (left)

An American toad (middle)

A leopard frog (bottom)

This summer, I have been doing some research on frogs and have started a frog photo collection (or, as Dad would say, a phrog photo collection). I have seen frogs Up North, in DeWitt and even on my own porch. I have seen and photographed green frogs, gray tree frogs and leopard frogs. I have also taken pictures of American toads.

Here I am with a green frog along the Looking Glass River in DeWitt. I am kind of muddy from frog catching.

The Day of the Bass

Anglers near DeWitt will be happy to hear there are still big fish in the Looking Glass. So far in August, I have caught some big bass, river redhorse, some big, big white suckers and some good-sized rock bass. I have caught all these fish on nightcrawlers.

Whatever you do, don't fish near Bridge Street in DeWitt! Don't even waste your time! It's not like it's my secret fishing spot, or anything.

Fishing in Shiawassee County

On Saturday, July 31, Dad took me to fish at a lake behind the house of a friend from work. The lake is near Owosso. It was really fun because we were able to move around the lake on a paddle boat and I caught some small perch, some nice bluegill and a big crappie. Then we ran out of worms. I asked Dad if I could fish from the dock and he said yes. I put a plastic "Panfish Assassin" minnow on my hook and cast the line about 20 feet out. Something big bit right away. At first, I thought it was a big bluegill, but he was tough so I thought he might have been a really big bass. Then the fish jumped out of the water and Dad yelled "Joseph, it's a pike!" This really big pike was putting up a fight and it took me about five minutes to get him to the shore. Dad helped with the net, and we got him on the grass. This pike was two feet! I had never caught a pike before. Dad took some pictures. I was really proud I caught such a big fish!

Fishing in the Looking Glass on July 26, 2010

I have had good luck fishing in the Looking Glass River in DeWitt this July. On July 18, I caught a nice rock bass. The next Monday was big! I caught several River Redhorse, including a real big one, a common carp, and some nice smallmouth bass. Saturday, July 24, was a good fishing day, too, as I caught more Reds and smallmouths. Today, Monday, July 26, saw lots of action! I caught a 19-inch carp and a 14-inch smallmouth and several other nice fish. I noticed I was not getting bites when I was using red worms, but when I switched to night crawlers, the fish really started to bite.

Hello, my name is Joseph. I am eight years old, I live in DeWitt, Michigan, and I like to fish! This blog will be my fishing report about what anglers can expect in mid-Michigan.
